Thanks to my favorite aunt Betty Jo the teachers of my English club, my head nun (Sister Mery),
and a few Nunnettes learned all about coloring Easter eggs and Easter egg hunts in general.
True to form Aunt B jumped right into class and started a vocabulary game on her end of the table. Within a few minutes she had all the teachers on her end laughing and pronouncing basic words such as “bunny”, “chick”, and so on with all sorts of gusto.
This English club originally started out as a “class” in which I was actually trying to teach the teachers of the adult school English
. It took me the better part of the first year to reconcile their verbal goal: becoming fluent in English, with the significantly
more attainable goal of learning a bit more English and a great deal about American culture.
This club and these teachers have taught me much about Bolivia, its people, and the complexities of the culture that make it so unique.
Sister Mery Gusman
has not only been an inspiration during my service but a true friend. She brings an unobtrusive intellect, a natural elegance and an ever present
sense of humor to her leadership; I can only hope some has rubbed off on me.
A special shout out
to my fabulous site-mate and the first Kansian (I swear she’s from Kansas!) I have ever met: Lindsay “Nutter” Dudley. Her addition to the English club makes us smile all the more.
I hope you all had a great Easter – it was certainly a good time down here south of the border!
xoxo,
