This fall my brother Armstrong (Army) and my father Bernie traveled all the way to Tarija to meet the newest guy in my life: Asterix!
Ok, well I guess they came to see me as well but Asterix was definitely a highlight of the trip. He lives on a farm about 25 minutes outside the city of Tarija at the home of Elke and Arend (Capitan) Smid; a retired German couple.
Their beautiful farm is truly an oasis and is aptly named Los Corceles
– the poetic name for “horse” in Spanish. The farm or ‘finca’ is home to ducks,
horses, birds (including a Chinese nightingale), exotic fish, dogs, a Shetland pony named “smurf”, and of course Asterix.
Dad enjoyed hanging out
with Rembrandt, Elke’s ‘baby’ Great Dane who is so strong and magical he can break bricks with the swing of his tail and occasionaly breaths fire when
not given enough attention!
Ok, so perhaps he lacks mythical power – but he’s huge, gorgeous, and totally mischievous.
Elke and Arend fixed
a spectacular lunch which we ate on the patio over looking Tarija’s reservoir surrounded by gorgeous mountains, and then we got both gentlemen riding!! Army rode my dearly beloved
and Dad took his own adventure with Cassandra. I must say Army & Dad were the ultimate good sports.
Riding isn’t that easy (or necessarily comfortable) if you haven’t done it in a long time and they managed to keep their seats AND smile the whole time! It was a great day – I’m just sorry I can’t show you video of the riding !!
Trust me when I say it would be good for a few chuckles ! I hope this finds you all well!!

Sarah, I read your latest and they make me miss you, but also see that you are your usual exuberant self. I loved that Bernie and Army came to see you and Asterix. John and I are planning a trip to DC after your arrival home, but not too soon. Can’t wait to see you. Linda
