Every day is a great day for a celebration – and what more worthy cause to celebrate than the dedication of teachers?
Everyone turned out for the festivities, and everyone came dressed up !
Gladys (in the center of this picture) is joking around with me as we were waiting to get in line to march around the town plaza. There are many communities around San Lorenzo
which do not have a plaza and thus they come to San Lorenzo for holidays and festivals, because no Bolivian event is complete without marching around the plaza !
Here students are
listening to speeches and waiting for the cue to get in line behind their school flag
and process through town. Interestingly, students practice marching from the earliest age
and boy are they adorable !! Preferably everyone should march in time
and the young man at the front of this procession is certainly trying his best – but it’s not always so easy. Each school has it’s own banner
and some of the high schools furnish special costumes and have had their students practice for weeks for the occasion :
a favorite tune is “The ants go marching on” (is that the correct title?) and these girls are twirling batons
!
My Profe’s were very excited to have me march with them – although they are thinking they might need to get me a navy blazer so I fit in better next time !
Hopefully –
I kept appropriately in step – everyone was watching !!
It was a fun celebration and it was quite heart warming to be considered a “Profe” in front of the district !
