FYI . . . I´m now addicted to CNN international . . . and this is the comment I just sent in to them . . .they recently put up a comment from a PCV in Peru. The internet is certainly providing all sorts of new and powerful outlets !!
Hatred, intolerance, and extreme violence are weekly occurrences worldwide. We who have lived in ¨first world¨countries come to expect and demand a higher level of personal security as the norm. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case in the rest of the world.
A few months ago a local mayor´s house was burned to the ground solely because he had made some unpopular political decisions. Resorting to violence is hardly ever the answer, but hopefully we Americans and fellow ¨first worlders¨ begin to awake to the fact that we are neither above nor immune to extreme violence on our home turf.
On the upside, it is greatly heartening to hear so many Bolivians offering prayers, good wishes, and condolences as my fellow Peace Corps Volunteers and I walk and work among them.
